FEEDING:
Recipe: 1 part sugar to 4 parts water.
To make 5 cups of food, mix 1 cup sugar with 4 cups of water.
Bring to boil and continue to boil until sugar is completely
dissolved.
Let cool before adding to feeders. Will refrigerate for two
weeks.
Use white table sugar only. Honey can encougage a lethal fungus.
Do not add red food coloring. All feeders have red to attract
birds.
Unused sugar water will ferment and get cloudy.
It will be ok for two weeks in winter, maybe one week in summer.
Wash the feeder every time you refill it. Hang feeders in shade.
BREEDS:
Anna's: Males are large and have a
red head.
Costas: Males are small and have a
purple head and throat.
Black-chinned: Have a black throat with
purple border.
Roufous: Orange-red throat, roufous
back and tail.
Calliope: Smallest in USA. Shortish
bill and stubby tail.
Reddish-purple throat. Noisy wings.
The males are colorful, to attract females.
Females are dull to be inconspicuous in the nest.
TRICK:
Hummingbirds like insects(to eat). Try hanging a banana peel
in a tree.
It will draw gnats, which will attract hummers.
PLANTS:
Any plant with red, yellow, pink, lavender, even blue flowers will attract hummingbirds.
